The Dawson County Leap for Literacy event which was set to be held at War Hill Park in Dawsonville on Saturday, March 14, has been postponed, officials with Dawson County WEE Books announced on Wednesday.

According to a press release from the group, the decision to cancel the event was made after talks with Cawson County Fire and EMS, and was based on the high water level of Lake Lanier, water debris present in the area and a potential heightened risk of E. coli.

"We have been working with Dawson County EMS to monitor the situation based on their information," spokesperson Andrea McKenzie said in an email. "We would never want to put any of our supporters in harm's way."

Mckenzie said they hope to reschedule the event for a date in mid-August.

Dawson County WEE Books is a local nonprofit organization that sends a free book each month to participating Dawson County children aged 0-5. The annual Leap for Literacy helps raise funds to send age-appropriate books to almost 900 kids in the community.
