After a successful food distribution event held earlier this month, officials with the local charity, Dawson County Family Connection, say they plan to continue giving away free boxes of fruits and vegetables to Dawson County residents throughout the month of July.

Family Connection, in partnership with Farmers to Families Food Box and the Dawson County School System, gave out 480 free boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables on Monday, June 8. After the success of this first distribution, the organizations are planning on making this a regular occurrence.

Nancy Stites, Dawson County Family Connection Coordinator, said that the upcoming food distributions will work the same way as the first one did.

“There will be community distribution at (Dawson County Junior High School),” Stites said. “Drive under the covered area and remain in the car; we’ll be giving one box per family.”

In addition to the central pickup location, Stites said that during each event, there will be distributions at other sites in the county.

“We are planning to have volunteers distribute food from their truck at certain sites in the county,” Stites said. “We’ll be choosing those sites early next week, and the activity of each of the sites will drive our decisions on how to handle that in the following weeks.”

The distribution on July 1 is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. and to run until all the boxes of food are gone, or until 6 p.m. The other distribution dates are currently scheduled to take place in the same time frame, but this could be subject to change, Stites said.

“We may end up changing pick-up time depending on the pick-up flow on July 1,” she said. “This is all new and we are trying to reach the most people, so we’ll have to experiment a little the first couple of weeks.”

The current dates scheduled for food distributions include:

  • Wednesday, July 1

  • Monday, July 6

  • Monday, July 13

  • Monday, July 20

  • Wednesday, July 29

The food boxes will be available free to any Dawson County resident.
