Churches targeted by electronic thieves

Two area congregations arrived Sunday to find electronic equipment missing from their churches.

Dawson County Sheriff's Capt. Tony Wooten said sound equipment was taken from Bethel Baptist Church, 2659 Hwy. 136 West, and Juno Baptist, 1230 Juno Road.

"They pried a back window open at one and went in through the side of the other," Wooten said.

Authorities believe the thefts occurred over the weekend.

"At both churches, they took four microphones," Wooten said. "And at Bethel they attempted to steal a mixer, sound board, but couldn't get it out."

Electronic equipment at churches has been the target of numerous recent thefts, with as many as six reports prior to the weekend.

There have also been church burglaries reported in neighboring Lumpkin County.

Investigators are trying to determine if the cases are related.
