Emergency officials confirmed a young boy was shot in Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area late Friday afternoon.

The shooting appears to be accidental, according to authorities.

Eleven-year-old John Wayne Corcoran, of Dawsonville, was transported by air to Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta with what authorities initially called life-threatening injuries. Officials have since confirmed Corcoran died at the hospital late Friday night.

Sgt. Johnny Holtzclaw, spokesperson for the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, said the preliminary investigation has revealed that the boy appears to have been shot in the head during a hunting accident.
