Authorities have identified a man found dead on the Appalachian Trail in the area of Amicalola Falls State Park Tuesday morning.
Michael Johnson, 54, of Liberty, Ky., was found dead July 11. According to authorities, it is believed that he was hiking.
At about 9:41 a.m. July 11, the sheriff's office 911 center received a call of a possible dead body, according to Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson. When officers arrived they found a deceased white male located an estimated 75 yards north of the Len Foote Hike Inn.
Sheriff Johnson said that a hiker reported the body.
Johnson said there were no apparent signs of foul play, but the investigation is still active. The death appeared to be recent, according to Johnson.
County Coroner Ted Bearden said the cause of death is pending an autopsy report, which he does not expect to receive for about six months.
