In the June 9 primary election, incumbent Billy Thurmond defeated opponent Renee Duren for the Dawson County Commission Chair seat.

With all Dawson County Polls reporting and the majority of absentee ballots counted, these are the preliminary final results.

Billy Thurmond: 60.9 percent (4,047)

Renee Duren: 39.1 percent (2,594)

Who he is: Billy Thurmond, a Dawson County native, has been the Chairman of the Dawson County Board of Commissioners since January 1, 2017. Before becoming chairman, Thurmond served 35 years in public safety, as well as a dual role in the parks and recreation department for 17 years. He holds a Masters Certification in Emergency Management and has 28 years of county budgeting and finance experience.

How he reacted: “I would like to thank all those people who supported me,” Thurmond said. “And I will continue to work hard for the citizens of Dawson County, as I have over the past years that I’ve served.”

On the issues: In his second term as Chairman, Thurmond plans to continue his efforts to improve communication with Dawson County residents. He also plans to update county ordinances to ensure the future of Dawson County is shaped in a way that citizens agree with and to make sure to manage the continued growth of the county so that it follows the wishes of the citizens.

What’s next: Thurmond will not face any Democratic challenger in the November general election.
