A Dawson County man was killed in a collision with a tractor trailer on Hwy. 53 west of Dawsonville just before noon on Wednesday, Georgia State Patrol confirmed.

Dawson County Coroner Ted Bearden identified the man as Claude F. Nix, 81, of Big Canoe.

According to authorities, Nix was traveling east toward Dawsonville when the Toyota Sienna van he was driving reportedly crossed the centerline, collided head-on with the truck, overturned and came to a rest on its roof.

"[He] was killed on impact," said Robin Stone, a state patrol spokeswoman.

The driver of the tractor trailer, 43-year-old Waymon McMillan of Maxton, N.C., attempted but was unable to avoid the van, she said.

McMillan was treated at the scene. Emergency personnel said he was not seriously injured.

Drugs or alcohol are not considered to be factors in the wreck, Stone said.

The wreck marked the county's fifth traffic fatality of 2013 and the sixth death on Dawson County roads.
