Authorities are investigating an apparent stabbing that left a 26-year-old man hospitalized Tuesday in critical condition.

Dawson County Sheriff’s Lt. Tony Wooten said the man, whose name has not been released, “appears to have been stabbed twice.”

Dawson County Emergency Services Director Billy Thurmond said the man was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital about 5 a.m. Tuesday.

“The victim stated to our crew that the stabbing was self-inflicted and accidental,” he said.

Thurmond said the man had at least two wounds in the abdomen.

Family members were at the Tanner Hall Road residence in northern Dawson County when emergency officials arrived.

As of Tuesday afternoon, investigators were still trying to determine if the incident occurred at the home or somewhere else.

“Investigators said it didn’t appear the stabbing happened there,” Wooten said.
