A head-on collision on Dawsonville Hwy. near the Dawson-Forsyth County line last week injured five, including three children.

"One of the children was in critical condition," said Billy Thurmond, Dawson County Emergency Services director.

The two-vehicle collision occurred about 6:45 a.m. Nov. 14 in a sharp curve just east of War Hill Park Road.

According to a Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman, Fredina Marie Elrod, 62, of Gainesville, was headed west on Hwy. 53 toward Dawsonville when the KIA Forte she was driving crossed the center line in the curve and collided head-on with a pickup driven by Eugene Hintz, 48, of Cumming.

Emergency workers from Forsyth County transported Elrod, who was entrapped in the crashed vehicle for a period of time, to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Her three passengers, ages 2, 4, and 6, were taken by ambulance to Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta.

Thurmond said Hintz was taken by private vehicle to Northside Forsyth for evaluation.

Elrod has been charged with failure to maintain lane and a child restraint violation.

The roadway reopened just after 8 a.m.
