A thanks for defending education in column

I just wanted to thank Dick Yarbrough for his recent column about teachers and the state of education in Georgia.

I am glad he will be watching Chip Rogers to see if he tries his vouchers bill again.

Last year, he and Gov. Nathan Deal received a congratulatory letter from Betsy DeVos of the AFC on their work to get vouchers.

Of course the scholarships given to students for private schools are just a step in that direction.

When did the state get the right and the okay from Georgians to use our tax money for private schools? He is correct, vouchers and School Choice are just another name for destroying public education.

I attended a wonderful workshop recently by the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute.

Many references were made to the fact that we have changed our culture towards education so much that we were pleased not to have any more budget cuts.

How about restoring some of the $2.5 billion taken away from education in the past 10 years?

Increasing revenue was mentioned many times. Of course that is taboo!

If they just cut out the loopholes and exemptions in our tax code, we would have hundreds of millions to put back in our schools.

I was in public education in Georgia for 43 years.

I am proud of my work and the work of my colleagues.

Mr. Yarbrough, please continue to support education and call out those that don't!

What has happened to public education in the last 10 years could destroy our state!
