Tigers finish in eighth place
Davenport will serve as alternate

The Dawson County High School boy’s track team finished in eighth place during the Region 8-AA track meet last week in Jefferson.

 

Head Coach Arron Haynes’ Tigers totaled 28.5 points in the two-day event held at the Bryan-Keen Track.

 

North Oconee narrowly captured the team title with 154.5 points.

 

The Titans edged out Elbert County by 1.5 points. The Blue Devils scored 153 points to take second place.

 

Despite several fine individual performances the Tigers were not able to place any runner in first or second place.

 

Without a winner or runner-up finish, Dawson County will not send a runner to the state track meet this weekend in Jefferson.

 

Rush Davenport had a big day at the finals on Monday.

 

Davenport picked up 11 team points with a third-place finish in the 400-meters and a fourth-place showing in the 100-meters.

 

In the 100-meters, Davenport will serve as an alternate to the state meet. If either the first or second place runners can’t make it to the state meet Davenport will replace them.

 

Davenport crossed the finish line with a time of 51.68 to take third.

 

Taking the title was Raheem Cowan of Hart County with a time of 50.73. K’Taro Cade of Elbert County came in second with a time of 51.23.

 

He also ran a strong race in the 400-meter.

 

Davenport finished with a time of 23.20 to take fourth. Elbert County took the top two spots.

 

Tevin Fleming crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 22.66.

 

His teammate Marquice Dye was right behind him with a time of 22.75.

 

Jonathon Erickson picked up two points in the 3,200-meters.

 

Erickson ran a time of 11:01.76 to take seventh-place. Tripp Hurt from North Oconee took the individual title with a time of 9:53.17. Finishing in second place was Ethan Alexander of Elbert County with a time of 10:40.74.

 

Zach Wilkins competed in two final events. Wilkins came in sixth-place in the 110-high hurdles. He crossed the finishing line with a time of 17.38.

 

In the 300-hurdles, Wilkins finished in sixth place with a time of 43.64. Wilkins picked up six team points for both events.

 

Winning the 110-high hurdles was Valdon Cooper of Elbert County. He broke the tape with a time of 14.33. Kendrick Presley of Oglethorpe County was the runner-up with a time of 15.96.

 

Davion Shackleford of Elbert County took the title in the 300-hurdles with an impressive time of 39.79. Kerry Mata of East Hall came in second just behind Shackleford with a time of 39.97.

 

On Saturday in the field events, Art Brown and Luke Parks picked up 3.5 points in the pole vault. Brown took sixth place with a jump of 11’6” for 2.5 points and

 

Parks finished in eighth place with a leap of 11’0,” good for one team point.

 

Mason Hamrick of Jefferson won the event with a jump of 13’0.”

 

Finishing second was Isaac Toney from North Oconee with a vault of 12’6.”

 

Tiger Preston Lewis threw the discus 131’2” to take fourth place. Lewis scored five team points for the Tigers.

 

Winning the discus was Nick Fulks from East Jackson with a throw of 145’3.”

Alex Noakes from North Oconee finished as runner-up with a throw of 137’2.”

 

The season is now over for the boys’ track team.
