Three Dawson County wrestlers competed at the GHSA state traditional meet in Macon over the weekend, with Ethan Powell making it to the consolation quarterfinal round.

After falling in the first round of Class 3A’s 126-pound bracket, Powell defeated Calhoun’s Jesus Gonzalez 4-0 with a takedown in the first and second periods. His bid to make the consolation semifinals ended with a slim 4-3 loss to Cherokee Bluff’s Hayden Biggs, who secured a reversal with 25 seconds left in the second period.

At 170 pounds, Kincaid Schuette won his first bout of the tournament over Stone Mountain’s Tyrek Johnson, 12-6. Schuette scored five points in the third period on an escape, a takedown and a near fall to distance himself and eventually take the win. That was where his tournament run ended, though, with two successive losses coming after his initial victory.

DJ Mitchell shared a similar fate to Schuette, winning his first matchup before bowing out with two losses. In his 3-1 win over Hart County’s Elijah Hester, Mitchell took a 1-0 lead on a reversal in the third period before taking advantage of a penalty and a stalling call to take the win.
