The Dawson County United under-14 boys’ soccer team finished third in the state tournament May 22-23 in Columbus.

Head Coach Jerry Yarbrough’s team advanced to the elite eight in Columbus by going undefeated in district play in a three-game round robin format that featured the best teams in the region.

In the district title game, Dawson tied the GSA Renegades.

The tie earned GSA the district title by cumulative goals allowed. Yarbrough’s team still qualified for state, earning them one of the two open wild cards available for the state finals.

A three-game round robin event was the format used in the state tournament.

The team was matched up with the GSA Renegades in the first round and came away with a huge 1-0 win.

In the second round, the team defeated the Hinesville Gators by a 5-0 score.

The only loss for the team was to eventual state champion, SCY Portugal 1-0.

Against SCY Portugal, the game looked to finish in a 0-0 draw, but a late goal gave SCY Portugal the win.

It was the only loss in either tournament for the local team.

Dawson County United Club President Anton Sieber said: “The entire club is really proud of the U14 boys. We have all seen them grow tremendously over the past year. They have worked hard and they are all turning into quality soccer players.”

“The boys worked harder than they have ever worked at anything before. They’ve put in the work and deserve a lot of praise for what they have accomplished,” said Yarbrough.

The eight teams that qualified for state were: Dawson County United, SCY Portugal from Cobb YMCA, GSA Renegades (Gwinnett Soccer Association), GSA/LYSC Hi-Liters (Lilburn Youth Soccer Club), Arsenal (Macon Soccer Club), Hinesville Recreation Gators, SDY Jaguars (South Dekalb YMCA) and NASA Adrenaline (North Atlanta Soccer Association).
