Park and recreation girls win state championship

The Dawson County Parks and Recreation 11-12 girls all-star basketball team won the District 7 Championship February 27-28 in Rabun County.

 

The team defeated opponents from Commerce, Union and Towns counties to capture the trophy.

 

On March 6-7, the team won the Park and Recreation state championship in the Georgia Girls Class C tournament.

 

The team has had a successful run.

 

The team has won the state championship for the last three years. Once as 9-10 year olds and twice as an 11-12 year old team.

 

Members of this year's team were: Carly Bearden, Haley Burgess, Ansley Costley, Brittany Griggs, Emily Hunsucker, Cassidy Lecours, Ashley Parker, Peyton Porter, Cheyenne Seabolt and Summer Vaughn.

 

Athletic Director for Dawson County Parks and Recreation, Kristi Creegan said: "This is a great group of girls who work hard on the basketball court. Thanks to the coaches, head coach Jeff Parker, assistants Kirk Porter and Barry Bearden."

 

The team defeated Glennville and Fitzgerald to reach the championship game against Rabun County.

 

Dawson soundly defeated Rabun by a final score of 52-35 to win the championship.
