Dawsonville Lady Tigers 12 and under travel basketball team captured back-to-back championships at local tournaments in April.
Made up of Dawsonville residents, the team roster includes: Libby Redmon, Carly Gilreath, Hannah Porter, Gracie Hovan, Brittany Duffy, Kacie Bearden, Kenna Seitz, Sammie Smith, Whitney Glover and Allie Costley.
Tanya Porter leads the team as head coach with Calvin Byrd assisting.
Porter attributes the Tigers success to a balance of scoring threats while getting fine play from the whole team.
"At the Dawson Smith Cager Classic in Cumming, we had seven of 10 girls score in double digits for the tournament, but getting quality minutes from the entire roster is what made the difference down the stretch," said Porter.
The Lady Tigers rolled through the Cherokee County Shootout by going undefeated, but only after narrowly winning an overtime thriller in the semi-finals. After trailing the entire game, the Tigers hit a three-pointer with seconds to go in regulation to send the game into overtime.
A stunned Cherokee Lady Shooters team could not recover, and the Tigers won the overtime frame to carry them into the championship game, which the Lady Tigers won.
Two weeks later, the Lady Tigers won the Dawson Smith Cager Classic in Cumming by going 4-1. The team's only stumble was a nail-biter against the Rabun County Bearcats by three points. Fortunately that loss was short lived as the two teams met a day later in the championship game, where the Tigers dominated from the opening tip-off and won 51-40 to collect their second straight trophy.
