The Dawson County Middle School seventh grade basketball team lost a heartbreaker to Fannin County, 26-25, in the championship game of the Mountain League Basketball Tournament Friday, Feb. 6.

The Lady Tigers went into the tournament as the #2-seed. The team finished the season with a 14-3 record. All three losses came to Fannin County.

Receiving the academic award was Kara Hafermalz. Hannah Moye was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Dawson trailed most of the game. Head Coach Tina Brown’s team trailed by three points throughout.

After one quarter the team was behind 7-4; at halftime 9-6; after three quarters 15-12 before tying the game in the fourth quarter at 21-21 forcing an overtime period.

In the overtime period, Fannin outscored the Lady Tigers 5-4 to get the win and the championship.

Emily Ayers led all Lady Tiger scorers with 10 points. Moye added 9 points in the loss. Also scoring were: Madison Shope-2; Brooke Duffy-2 and Alison Honea-2.

“We were behind most of the game but didn’t give up,” said Brown. “We had opportunities to score but just couldn’t finish it. We missed 14 free throws and you can’t miss this many in any close game and come out on top.”

“I am very proud of the girls. They have worked hard all season,” Brown said about her team.
