A big crowd was on hand recently at Sandy Walls Field in Dawsonville for the opening of Dawson County Middle School football.

An overflow crowd saw the Tigers come up on the short end of a 20-14 loss.

This was the first game for the combined players from Riverview and Dawson County middle schools.

It was also the first game with the combined teams from Jasper Middle and Pickens Middle.

Pickens jumped out to a 20-0 lead before Dawson County finally crossed the goal line on a great run from 30-yards out by Tiger running back Luke Smith.

At halftime the coaches made some adjustments and the Dragons didn't score again.

"Offensively we moved the ball well, but we had a couple of drives stall out," said head coach Thomy Edwards.

Smith added another Tiger touchdown in the second half on a 70-yard touchdown gallop.
"Our kids never gave up," Edwards said.

Up next for Dawson County will be a 5 p.m. kickoff on Thursday at Fannin County to face the Rebels.
