Dawson County Middle School used a ball control offense to come away with a 14-6 win at Pickens County Middle School last Thursday.

The Tigers used five different running backs on offense.

With the win, Dawson County is 2-1 overall this season.

Next week the Tigers will play host to Jasper Middle School.

Jasper lost in triple overtime to Fannin County last week. The team also sports a 2-1 record currently.

Tigers Head Coach Thomy Edwards' team got on the scoreboard first on a 5-yard touchdown run by running back Conor Woodbury. Woodbury dominated the drive with several hard runs against the Pickens defense.

Quarterback Brody Chester hit wide receiver Austin Young on a huge reception that set up the Woodbury touchdown.

Woodbury rumbled into the end zone for the 2-point conversion to give the Tigers an 8-0 lead with only 32 seconds remaining before halftime.

Defensively, the Tigers were strong. Dawson allowed Pickens only one first down the entire first half and that came on a half back pass just before time ran out before halftime.

"Our defense played extremely well the entire ball game," Edwards said.

Pickens got its only touchdown on the opening kickoff to start the second half.

The Dragons' kickoff return man caught the ball and went untouched down the left sideline for a 65-yard score.

The 2-point attempt was not good. Dawson held on to the 8-6 lead.

The Tigers answered on the opening play of the final quarter. Woodbury took a handoff from Chester and found a huge hole created by his offensive linemen to score a 22-yard touchdown.

Dawson's 2-point conversion was intercepted but the Tigers held a commanding 14-6 advantage.

A turnover stopped Pickens' next drive. Chester jumped on the Dragons fumble on the 50-yard line to give the ball back to the Tigers.

Dawson could not move the ball on offense and ended up having to punt the ball back to Pickens.

The Tigers' defense stepped up blitzing the Pickens quarterback which forced a loss in yardage. Linebackers Woodbury, Hunter Burt and Chester put a lot of pressure on the Pickens offense and stopped them cold.

"I thought all of our linebackers did a great job flowing to the football," Edwards said. "We had some great plays from Conor Woodbury late in the game.

"Overall I am glad that our players bounced back from our loss last week," he added.
