During the first round of the Class AAA state tournament, the Dawson County Lady Tigers jumped out to an early lead over the Lovett Lady Lions and would not relinquish it on their way to the Sweet 16.

Dawson won at home 72-61.

The win earned the team a spot in the next round where they will face Monroe High School, the top team in Region 8.

"Monroe is a real good team and No. 1 seed," said Head Coach Steve Sweat. "Plus we have to go to their gym to play, but all of that is OK because we are playing in the Sweet 16."

During the Feb. 17 matchup, Kaylee Sticker started the game with a 3-pointer from down low.

On the opposite end Callie Watson would pick up a rebound before feeding Sticker for another 2 points.
A Marlie Townley rebound turned into 2 more points for the Lady Tigers before Sticker would find Townley again underneath twice more.

Sticker and Townley combined for the team's 13 points in the first quarter. They led 13-5.

"Overall I was really pleased with the effort of the girls," Sweat said. "We had some minutes when we got sloppy with the ball and we need to work on not having those letdowns."

In the second period, Townley began with a put back on her own shot.

Anna Lowe picked up a block underneath before Townley would do the same.

Lowe added yet another block and Sticker hit for 2 points and another 3-pointer on consecutive possessions.

Sticker finished the game with 26 points.

The initial seven unanswered in the second prompted a Lovett timeout when they were down 20-5.

Out of the break, Sticker was good for another 2 points in the lane and freshman Chloe Bennett entered the game and drained her own three.

"Chloe picked a good time to have her break out game," Sweat said. "I love to see any of them perform up to their potential and she did."

Two plays later, Bennett hit another 3-pointer. She would finish with three 3-point shots and 17 points in the game.

The Lady Tigers took a 32-18 lead into half.

In the second half, the shooting only seemed to get better for the Dawson squad with Abi Chatham putting in 3 points from the top right.

Lowe scooped up the next two rebounds and Watson added three from the left side.

With 3:49 in the third period, Lovett called a time while they were down 44-27.

Townley added another huge block before Bennett would go to the line and hit both.

Watson hit another three from up top and Lowe had 2 points from the top of the key.

The Lady Tigers had a 51-38 lead heading into the final period.

Lovett was able to cut the lead to 8 points with just under 5 minutes remaining, but could not ever pull ahead.

The Lady Lions fouled down the stretch but Sticker, Watson and Bennett hit everything from the line.

The win sends the Lady Tigers (11-17, 5-7) to Albany to play the Monroe High School (21-4, 7-1) at 6 p.m. today.

If Dawson is able to defeat the top-seeded Tornadoes, the team will advance to the Elite Eight to play the winner of Pierce County and Morgan County. Game time for that game had not been released as of press time.
