Wrestlers take two

The Dawson County High School varsity wrestling team picked up two wins Dec. 9 at East Jackson.

Coach Arron Haynes' team defeated Oglethorpe County, 63-18, and host East Jackson, 60-12.

Pinning their opponents, all in the first period, against East Jackson, were Ethan Cowart, Josh Poe, Harrison Adams, Caine Wells, Brett Whalen, Ty Williams and Justin Evans.

Winning by forfeit were James Steele and Brenden Capps.

In two exciting matches, Jeremy Whalen won 8-3 and Gilbert Pruitt picked up a close 11-9 win.

Against Oglethorpe County, the Tigers didn't have much trouble defeating the Patriots handily.

Six points were earned, by way of pin, by James Steele over Devin Crowe, Justin Evans against Zachary Ash, Harrison Adams over Dustin Martin, Jeremy Whalen against Mick Meadows, Gilbert Pruitt over Reese Whatley and Brenden Capps versus Andrew Spooner.

Points by forfeit were earned by Cowart, Wells, Whalen and Williams.

Quade Buytendorp also earned valuable points with a 10-5 decision over Devin Steiner.

This week will be difficult for the Tigers.

Yesterday the team traveled to wrestle Banks County. The Leopards are state contenders and are very talented. Habersham Central, AAAAAA, will also wrestle in the tri-match.

Scores were unavailable at press time.

Friday the team will host Lumpkin County and Fannin County.

Both matches will begin at 5 p.m.

On Saturday the team will be on the road again. The Tigers will head to Toccoa to wrestle in the Arrowhead Classic at Stephens County High School. First match will begin at 9 a.m.
