Walters named runner of the year
Thurmond placed on first team

The 2011 Region 8-AA cross country team was named last week. The girls' runner of the year was Madalyn Walters from Dawson County.

Walters won the Region 8-AA championships held at Oglethorpe County High School in October and placed fourth in the state championships in Carrollton.

Walters was the only Lady Tigers named to the team.

Tigers Tyler Thurmond was placed on the Region 8-AA first team.

Joining Thurmond on that list were: Ross Morris (Hart County), Kyle Kashuba and Trae Timmerman (Jefferson), Cale Pirtle (East Jackson), Cole Thornton (North Oconee) and Jeremy Webb (Union County).

The boys' region runner of the year was Justin Whitman from Oglethorpe County.

Dawson's Chris Bywaletz was named to the second team all-region for his fine performance this season.

Also named second team were: Jason Wright and Preston Devaney (North Oconee), Cody Boswell (Fannin County), Francisco Hurtado (Banks County), Stuart Robinett (East Jackson) and Stephen King (Rabun County).
