Tigers take fourth at Area duals

The Dawson County High School varsity Tiger wrestling team finished in fourth place at the Region 7-AAA Duals Tournament at West Hall High School in Oakwood on Saturday.

Coach Arron Haynes' squad defeated Franklin County, 55-24, to open the morning.

Up next was rival Lumpkin County, with the winner headed to the championship. Dawson County wasn't able to complete the task and lost 43-22 to move into the wrestle back round.

In the wrestle backs the Tigers had to come from behind to defeat East Hall, 45-28, but lost in the next round to host West Hall, 42-27. With the loss Dawson was eliminated from the tournament.

Several Tiger wrestlers went undefeated with 4-0 records, which included Justin Evans, Harrison Adams, Jeremy Whalen and Gavin Brown.

Against Franklin County, several Tigers won their matches by way of pin, earning six points. Pinning their opponents were Brown (182-pounds), Brett Whalen (195-pounds), Brenden Capps (220-pounds), Ty Williams (heavy-weight), Evans (113-pounds), Adams (138-pounds), Jeremy Whalen (145-pounds), and Caine Wells.

Winning by decision was Quade Buytendorp (126-pounds) by a 13-3 score. He earned four points for his team. At 152-pounds Gilbert Pruitt won 15-11 in a very exciting match.

In the loss to Lumpkin County, Justin Evans (113-pounds) pinned Bradley Graff and Josh Poe (132-pounds) pinned his opponent.

Winning by way of decision was Adams (138-pounds), 2-1, over Carter Hopkins, Jeremy Whalen (145-pounds) against Indian Logan Benson, 6-4, and Brown (182-pounds) dominated Caesar Ramos, 9-1.

Dawson County then moved to the wrestle back round to face East Hall, a team the Tigers defeated earlier this season.

Things didn't look good early for the Tigers. The team fell behind 24-12.

Jeremy Whalen finally gave the Tigers a lead with a pin, 27-24, but Dawson lost the next match to fall behind 28-27.

Wells (170-pounds) pinned his foe to give Dawson County the lead for good, 33-28.

Pinning their adversary were Williams (heavy-weight), Evans (120-pounds), Adams (145-piounds), Jeremy Whalen (152-pounds), Wells, Brett Whalen (182-pounds) and Brown (195-pounds).

Josh Poe (138-pounds) defeated his foe by a close 5-4 score.

In the final match of the meet, Dawson County fell behind early, 30-9, to West Hall and just couldn't recover.

The Tigers picked up three points from Adams (138-points) with an 8-3 decision.

Winning by pin were Brown (182-pounds), Jeremy Whalen (145-pounds) and Evans (120-pounds). Brett Whalen (195-points) picked up six points following a forfeit.

Winning the Region 7-AAA championship was Banks County.

The Tigers will wrestle again at Towns County on Jan. 20 in a tri-match with Towns and Fannin counties.
