Head coach Jeff Lee’s Tiger football team is still trying to find a win.

Last Friday night the team traveled to Jefferson to face the two-time Region 8-AA champions. The Dragons were just coming off their first regular season loss to North Hall, 24-21, in two years. Before the previous week, Jefferson hadn’t lost a regular season game since 2007.

Dawson County knew they were against the ropes after dropping their first two games to Pickens and Gilmer counties.

Jefferson lived up to expectations with a convincing 35-14 win over the Tigers.

Jefferson moved to 2-1 on the season and will face Hart County this week.

The Tigers are currently 0-3 on the season with a home game against Chestatee this Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

The Tiger defense stopped Jefferson on its first possession of the game. After an interception by Dragon Jason Demos, the Dragons didn’t take long to get on the scoreboard.

Dragon quarterback Bryant Sherriffs found the end zone with a 3-yard touchdown run. The extra point was true and Jefferson held a 7-0 lead with 6:41 left in the first quarter.

With 33 seconds remaining in the first quarter Sherriffs found tight end Damon Hoytes who bowled his way over the Tigers defenders. The extra point was good and Jefferson held a 14-0 lead.

The Dragons continued to roll in the second quarter. The team added two more touchdowns. Sherriffs found Cole Givens for his second touchdown pass of the evening. With 10:15 remaining Jefferson extended its lead to 21-0.

Sherriffs, the versatile Jefferson quarterback and Athens Academy transfer, finished the night going 11 of 16 for 162 yards. Sherriffs also ran for two touchdowns.

Jefferson scored again at the 5:48 mark of the second quarter to make the score 28-0.

Dawson continued to fight. Dominy led the team on an impressive drive right before halftime. Dominy found receivers Ethan Brown and Bruce Clark as the Tigers marched down the field on a 70-yard drive.

The Tigers finally found the end zone when Dominy hit Brown on a 12-yard scoring strike. Brown added the extra point and Dawson trailed 28-7 at the half.

Jefferson added another score in the third quarter on a 3-yard run by Sherriffs.

With 1:40 left in the third Jefferson held a commanding 35-7 advantage.

The Tigers scored with just over four minutes to play when Dominy hit Ethan Brown for his second touchdown catch of the game. Brown added the extra point and Dawson trailed 35-14.

Penalties were a problem for the Tigers all game. Dawson racked up nine penalties for 95 yards. Just when it seemed the Tigers had something going on offense a penalty cost them positive yardage.

The Tigers had one more chance before the end of the contest to score, but another interception sealed the game for Jefferson.

Lee and his offense managed 221 yards, mostly through the air, while the defense gave up over 350 yards in the loss.

Dawson will try and get back on track this week when they host a 1-1 Chestatee football team. The War Eagles trounced Johnson last week 49-13.

The Dawson defense must be aware of War Eagle quarterback Scott Chewning.

Chewning was 7-for-11 for 214 yards and three touchdowns against Johnson last Friday night. He also ran the ball three times for 38 yards.

The War Eagle defense is also strong, forcing five fumbles from Johnson.

Last time these two teams met, in 2007, Chestatee prevailed with a 49-10 win.

Kickoff for this week’s game will be at 7:30 p.m.
