Take I-85 South to Exit 101 (Indian Trail/Lilburn Road). Exit and turn left. GACS is located 3/4 mile on the right at the intersection of Oakbrook Parkway and Indian Trail Road.
The Tigers will finally get to lineup against another team. Dawson has been conducting football practice for the last three weeks and now it is time to play someone else.
Head Coach Jeff Lee and his team will travel to Norcross to face a traditionally tough team in Greater Atlanta Christian this Thursday.
“They are going to be well coached,” Lee said.
The Spartans will have a new head coach in Tim Cokely.
Cokely has won six state championships in Florida.
Cokely directed North Florida Christian to state titles in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2008. He also coached from 2005-2007 at Colquitt County High School, where he compiled a 14-18 record. His overall coaching record is 121-42.
Cokely replaces Ken Robinson. GAC had records of 4-7 and 1-9 under Robinson.
“GAC will be fundamentally sound,” Lee said. “Coach Cokely will do a good job with them and it will be a good test for us.
“We have a list of things we want to do on offense and defense. There is some other stuff we want to work on in the scrimmage as well,” he added.
Dawson’s varsity players will play the first three quarters with the JV playing the fourth quarter. There will only be live kicking on extra points and field goals.
“Practice has been going good for us despite the hot weather,” Lee said. “There were a couple of days we had to shorten things up because of the heat.”
The Tigers conducted a scrimmage last Friday.
“We scrimmaged 50 plays against each other and looked good. The players are ready to lineup against someone else besides themselves.”
Injuries have been minimal for the Tigers so far during practice.
Besides the normal bumps and bruises, defensive back Will Anglin, collarbone, is the only Tiger that has missed any amount of time. Anglin should be back for the Gilmer County game in week two.
Lee is concerned about his defensive line.
“We just don’t have a lot of defensive linemen. Matt Satterfield and Zack Johnson are our mainstays, but after that we are not sure. The rest of our defense looks good.
“We have looked good running the football with our new offense,” Lee said. “I feel good about where we are on offense.”
The Tigers will find out how far they have progressed after Thursday night’s game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
