On Wednesday, Lakeview Academy coach Todd Cottrell was announced as the new boy's basketball coach at Dawson County High School.

Cottrell will be taking over for Eric Herrick, who became the new Lady Tigers head coach after spending one season coaching the boys’ team.

Cottrell spent the last seven seasons with Lakeview Academy in Hall County. He led the Lions basketball team to back-to-back Region 8-A titles in 2016 and 2017, including a Class-A Private semi-final appearance in 2017.

Ten players signed college scholarships from Lakeview Academy while Cottrell was coach.

Prior to coaching at Lakeview Academy, Cottrell held the same position at Gainesville, Flowery Branch and White County.

Cottrell said he's only heard positive things about the Dawson County school system and is looking forward to becoming a part of it.

"I know everybody is looking forward to getting back into the gym," Cottrell said. "I just want to get in, meet the guys and get to work."

Dawson County Athletic Director Jason Gibson said that he loves how Cottrell’s former teams play with so much energy on the court and compete from ‘tip to buzzer.’

“We want him to bring some stability to our Boys program,” Gibson said. “In doing that, reach down into the younger grades and start to develop a strong feeder program that will continue to build and maintain a successful program.”
