The Dawson County Lady Tiger softball team picked up two important Region 8-AA wins during the past week. On Tuesday, the Lady Tigers defeated Banks County, 7-2, at home and then on Thursday the team defeated Rabun County, 5-2.
With the two wins Dawson is currently 8-7 overall and 4-2 in Region 8-AA play.
On Tuesday the Lady Tiger softball team recognized Breast Cancer Awareness Week by wearing pink jerseys for the game against Banks County (11-8; 3-3).
The extra motivation inspired the Dawson team as it scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back.
With one out Morgan Huber bunted for a base hit. Gracie Hovan followed with a single to left field that put runners on first and second.
The Lady Leopard pitcher walked clean-up hitter Jenna Abbott, which loaded the bases.
Sydney Crumbley smacked a double down the left field line that brought in two runs and gave Dawson a 2-0 lead.
First baseman Cheyenne Bennett followed with a double of her own that drove in two more runs and let Dawson jump out to a 4-0 lead.
Dawson wasn’t finished scoring.
Abbott led off the third inning and took a fastball over the centerfield fence for a solo homerun, Abbott scored three runs in the contest.
The Lady Tigers added two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to come away with the victory.
Collecting multiple hits in the game were Kimberly Wallace and Bennett with two hits apiece. Bennett drove in three RBI’s.
Abbott picked up the win on the mound with 10 strikeouts.
Thursday the team traveled to Tiger to face the Rabun County Lady Wildcats (1-7; 0-5).
Dawson got off to a quick start after scoring a run in the first inning as Wallace crossed the plate on an error by the Rabun third baseman, Wallace reached base on a single.
The Lady Tigers added to the lead by scoring single runs in the second and fourth innings, both by Katie Pulley. Dawson added two more runs in the top of the seventh by Wallace and Carly Gilreath.
Rabun picked up two runs in the bottom of the seventh off of Lady Tiger starter Cheyenne Bennett. Bennett picked up the final out by way of strikeout, she had eight strikeouts for the game.
Pulley led the Lady Tiger offensive attack with a double and a triple.
This week the Lady Tigers will play in a tournament sponsored by Milton High School.
Dawson will play John’s Creek in the opening round on Wednesday. The tournament will also be played on Friday and Saturday.
The Lady Tigers also have an important region game with Union County on Thursday at Jack Waldrop Field. Early in September the Lady Tigers lost to Union, 2-0, in Blairsville.
First pitch is at 5:55 p.m. with the Lady Panthers.
