The Dawson County High School girls' golf team finished just seven shots behind second place finisher North Oconee at the Region 8-AA golf tournament at Scales Creek Golf Course in Homer last week.

The top two golf teams in the region qualify for the state tournament.

Coach Van Samples' team scored a team total of 189 to North Oconee's 182 to keep them out of the state meet.

Madison Caldwell was low medalist for the Lady Tigers. She scored an 84 over 18-holes on a very tough course. Caldwell finished in third place in the individual tournament.

Capturing the low medalist individual title was Hannah Barger from Elbert County. Barger shot a 73 for the Lady Blue Devils.

Finishing in second place was Cara Gowder, playing on her home course, with an 80.

"Maddi is only a freshman and I thought she had a great season for us," Samples said. "She had an even par stroke average for the season, which is really good."

Also scoring for Dawson County were Taylor Hasbrouck with a 105, Rebecca Dotson with a 107 and Tatum Turner finished with a 111.

Only the top two scorers on each team are counted toward the team's final score.

Winning the Region 8-AA team championship was Elbert County. The team shot a total of 158.

The Lady Tigers had a great year and only lost two matches all season.

The AA State Tournament will be held at Goshen Plantation Golf Club in Augusta on May 7.
