The Dawson County Tigers golf team finished second in the area tournament Monday, April 26, advancing the team to the Georgia High School Association 3A state championships.
Andrew Hughes, Alex Hughes, Will Howard and Jalen Smith combined to score 327 points or 39 strokes above par. Westminster won the tournament with a score of 288.
Alex Hughes shot five strokes above par for the lowest Tiger score of the day. He was at par at the end of the front nine. His brother Andrew, shot seven strokes above par for the second low score. Howard shot ten strokes over and Smith shot 17 strokes over. Both Elijah Benson and Jeremy Ray played in the tournament for the Tigers. Ray shot a 90 and Benson shot a 99.

Tigers head coach Will Anglin said despite the underwhelming day, he was proud they did enough to qualify and thinks they are in a position to shock some teams at the state tournament. He added that he knew his team was top three in talent before the tournament started.
The Lady Tigers golfed after the boys tournament but were unable to claim a spot in the girls GHSA 3A state championships, finishing in fourth place. Carly Lamb shot the lowest score for the Lady Tigers with a 101, Kenzie Smith shot a 104 and Maddie Anglin shot a 114.
The state tournament will be a two-day event starting on Monday, May 17 at Cateechee Golf Club in Hartwell, Ga. The Tigers do not play any matches prior to the start of the tournament.
