Tiger Tyler Dominy was selected First Team All-Area by The Times of Gainesville last month. Dominy, a junior, was also chosen to the Region 8-AA first team by area coaches. In addition, Dominy was named All-State Honorable Mention.

The Dawson County junior averaged 14.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game for the AA state quarterfinalists.

Dominy also reached another milestone this season by scoring his 1,000th point midway through the season.

"He has been our main ‘go to' guy this year," said Head Coach Thad Burgess. "He allowed our other players on the team to have great seasons due to teams concentrating on him. [He is] unselfish and team oriented. With him being our only returning starter on our team [from the previous season], we were able to rely on him especially early in the season, while the new faces gained valuable experience.

"I believe he has a great deal of potential left and want to see him move to another level He has all the skills, size and is a great young man."

The Tigers head coach was also named Boys Coach-of-the-Year by the Times.

Burgess led the Tigers to a 25-7 overall record. Dawson County picked up some memorable wins this season with a clean sweep of Elbert County, East Hall, Jefferson, Calhoun and Buford to get to the Elite Eight. The Tigers were eliminated by Jordan, 48-47, in the closing seconds of the game.

"I have not experienced a better feeling from a bunch of young men than what this team gave this school and community in my coaching career. I just sit back and enjoyed the ride.

"I could not have imagined what they accomplished after beginning the year with only one starter returning after losing the outstanding group of seniors we had the previous year.

"It has been a joy being around these boys beginning with the summer and then experiencing their unbelievable effort and pride they put into this year," Burgess said.

"My greatest thoughts are for the wonderful group of young men that I have coached over the last nine years, made this season possible. They bought into our basketball program and help make this year possible. I think about each one of them when I received this award, it was their award."

Joining Dominy on the Times All-Area first team were: Ebo Smith, North Hall, J.C. Hampton, East Hall, Brian Edwards, East Hall, Montrell McKenzie, Johnson, and T.J. Shipes, Buford.

Hampton was named Player-of-the-Year. He averaged 27.6 points, 3.5 assists, and 3.7 steals per game. Hampton will play next season at Lipscomb University.

On the Times second team were: Kevin Ellison, Habersham Central, Matt Hollis, Johnson, Austin Thompson, Jefferson, Shaquan Cantrell, Gainesville, Jamaad Stephens, Flowery Branch, and Austin Montgomery, Lakeview Academy.

The Times also named Tiger player Will Anglin to the honorable mention team.

"Will is our team leader on and off the court. He has a great work ethic and character. He will not let this team lose or not give their all. Will has had some big scoring games late in the season during our run to the Elite Eight," Burgess said.
