DCHS wrestlers finish winning season, prepare for state

The Tiger wrestlers dominated over White County in their last home match of the season, outscoring their opponents 60-12 Jan. 23. It was also the team’s senior night, recognizing Brandon Jones, Nate Umberger, Jake Williams and the late Mitchell Cooper for their contributions to the program.

The Dawson County wrestling team finished off their season with a 20-12 record, putting them in good position for state sectionals Feb. 2-3.

Coach Arron Haynes and the wrestlers traveled to Morgan County for the Area Traditional tournament Jan. 26-27 where the team took home fifth place overall. Individually, eight of the 11 wrestlers placed, with six qualifying for State Sectionals which takes place at Greater Atlanta Christian Feb. 2-3.

Levi Baggett was the area champion in the 182 weight class. In the 120 weight class, Kelton LeBaron was the area runner-up. Wyatt Smith, 126, and Brandon Jones, 160, each earned third. Nate Umberger, 170, and Jake Williams, 285, received fourth. The state alternates are Christian Harper who received fifth in the 138 weight class and Danny Phillips who was sixth in the 220 weight class.
