The Dawson County boys and girls golf teams hosted the inaugural Tiger Invitational at Chestatee Golf Club on Monday, Feb. 21.

More than three months in the making, the Tiger Invitational was a collaborative effort between the coaches, Chestatee Golf Club, sponsors and parents to help raise funds for the golf teams.

In total, 96 players participated at the event, 50 sponsors were represented and thousands of dollars were donated in raffle items and prizes.

Activities included team, longest drive and closest-to-the pin competitions.

“There were so many people that helped make this possible. The support we received from sponsors was genuinely remarkable,” boys team head coach Will Anglin said. “Many of us have been working since November to make this happen, and it was great to see all the hard work pay off.”

For Anglin and girls team head coach Tyler Baker, the tournament showed the strong support the Dawson County community has for the golf teams as they begin their competitive seasons soon.

Last season, the boys team finished as runner-up at the Area Tournament and in third place at the State Tournament.

Four of last year’s six starters will return and the team will be led by seniors Alex Hughes, Seth Jackson and Christian Roper.

The girls team is comparatively younger, consisting of one freshman and a trio of sophomores led by Samantha Dewendt. Just weeks before the Tiger Invitational, the girls team was awarded a $600 grant from the Georgia Women’s Golf Association.

The golf teams are set to begin their seasons on Thursday, Feb. 24, against East Forsyth, hosted by Chestatee Golf Club. The boys team will participate in several tournaments this season, beginning with one hosted by Hampton Golf Village in Cumming on Saturday, Feb. 26.
