Lady Tiger Charley Whitmire overcame a tough front nine to finish fourth individually in the girls division in the Coal Mountain Golf Classic Saturday at Hampton Golf Club.
Whitmire fired a career best back-nine 38 to come in with a 91.
Whitmire’s score, combined with senior classmate Katie Stower’s 98, was good enough for a fourth place finish for the Lady Tigers.
The team scored a combined 198. Dawson was the smallest school in the event, which was hosted by North Forsyth High School.
Defending state champion Chattahoochee finished with a 173, followed by Pickens County with a 183. Coming in third was North Gwinnett with a 188.
Matt Christopher had the best round for Coach Van Samples’ team with an 18-hole total of 87. The team finished the event with a 362.
Tiger teammate Wesley Bearden shot a 91, followed by Nick Fitts, Cody Palmer and Zach Williams, who all came in with a 92.
Last Wednesday, both teams played host to Pickens County at Crystal Falls Golf Course.
Dawson came home with a 173-181 victory over the Dragons. The Tigers are currently 2-1 on the season.
Junior Justin Denard led Dawson with a 42. Senior Matt Christopher and Sophomore Wesley Bearden both shot a 43 in the 9-hole event. Rounding out the scoring was Cody Palmer with a 45.
The Lady Tigers also had a successful afternoon as Head Coach Shari Chastain’s squad took on 7-AAA Pickens. The Lady Tigers moved to 2-0 with the 98-99 win.
Seniors Charley Whitmire and Katie Stowers both posted scores of 49 to lead Dawson.
Pickens Amanda DeJacomo led all scoring with a 47.
It will be a busy week for both teams.
Wednesday, the team will be at Crystal Falls with a 9-hole match against Jackson County.
Thursday, Dawson will host Flowery Branch at Chestatee Golf Course.
Next week, both teams will be at Chestatee against East Jackson on Monday and will then travel to Chattahoochee Golf Club to face a very strong Gainesville team on Tuesday.
All matches will start at 4 p.m.
