Gilreath named pitcher of week

Former Dawson County High School baseball player Chase Gilreath has been named Pitcher of the Week for Columbus State for the week ending Feb. 28.

The Cougars play in the Peach Belt Conference.

Gilreath, a sophomore, pitched seven innings during the week and gave up five hits and one run while striking out five and recording no walks.

So far this season he has pitched 10 innings and has an earned run average of 0.90 with nine strikeouts.

Gilreath has appeared in five games.

During a recent game, Gilreath took the mound in the 10th inning of a tied game against No. 17 ranked Armstrong State and pitched four innings of 4 hit ball. He struck out three and recorded the win.

He also pitched three innings, earlier in the week, against Young Harris. He gave up a homer, his only hit and run allowed.

On Feb. 29, Gilreath pitched one inning and struck out two batters in an 11-2 win over West Georgia.

The Cougars are currently 12-3 on the season and are 4-2 in the conference.
