This May, the Dawson County News will host a brand new event honoring athletes in Dawson County with the first-ever Athlete of the Year banquet. 

With the help of coaches at Dawson County High School, the DCN will recognize five male and five female athletes at the event for their accomplishments throughout the 2020-2021 high school season.

"We are proud to finally make this event a reality," DCN Editor Alexander Popp said. ”Season after season, young athletes in our community show that they are not just some of the best in the region, but also the state and the nation." 

The event will be held at Cold Creek Farms in Dawson County on May 12, 2021, and will feature a full sit-down dinner, special awards and a new DCN Athlete of the Year magazine featuring the event’s winners and finalists.

“We are looking forward to playing a small part in the ceremony and enjoying a night celebrating our student-athletes here in Dawson County,” Dawson County Athletic Director Jason Gibson said.

The event’s Exclusive Title Sponsor, Roger Slaton of Roger Slaton State Farm said that he’s excited for an opportunity to support athletics at his alma mater. 

“Sports are educational and help with maturity,” Slaton said. “I’m proud of the athlete’s attitudes and personality that are shown on our respected fields. I’m honored to honor our young people.” 

Player of the Year finalists have not been announced yet but will be announced with more details prior to the event.
