The Dawson County High School swim team traveled to Adairsville and Cumming last week for two events where freshman swimmer Matthew Wood qualified in his second and third events for state.
The swim team was also able to finish with their fastest recorded times in multiple events.
"It was a great weekend for the DCHS boys' swim team," said Coach Linda Sperin.
Wood qualified for state in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.70 seconds on Jan. 12.
Dawson County swam against teams from Cass County, Cartersville, SE Whitfield and Darlington.
The team competed in the 200-yard medley relay and recorded the fastest time every by DCHS swimmers at 2 minutes and 5.41 seconds.
The relay team consists of Wood, Clay Boyer, Garrett Perez and Nathan Frazier.
In the 200-yard free relay, Wood, Kelyan Steffins, Rustin Howell and Perez also recorded a DCHS record time at 1:57.91.
"I am so proud of ‘my' boys. They have come so far in such a short amount of time," Sperin said. "They make coaching fun and they get along and have fun with each other."
During the Jan. 13 event at the Cumming Aquatic Center, Wood qualified for his third state event in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.88.
Wood's first state-qualifying time came on Nov. 16 when he swam the 100-meter fly at 57.9.
The Tigers swam against Lambert, South Forsyth, Chamblee, Sequoyah, Spalding, St. Francis, Pinecrest, Lumpkin and Buford in the Friday meet.
Frazier swam the 100-yard freestyle in 1:09.76 which was two seconds faster than his time the night prior.
Also besting his time from Thursday night, Boyer swam the 100-yard breast stroke in 1:22.71. That time was two seconds faster.
Steffins recorded his best time in the event at 1:37.47 and Perez finished at 1:27:97 despite it being the first time ever competing in that event during a meet.
Frazier, Boyer, Perez and Wood set another school best time in the 400-yard free relay at 4:27.54.
"We had a good finish in the 50 freestyle during the two meets," Sperin said. "Frazier, Howell, Boyer, Steffins, Logan Starr and Carter Rexroat all had personal bests."
Frazier had the top time at 28.72, besting Howell by less than three tenths of a second. In the medley relay, Frazier's split was a 28.05.
The team will next compete at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 26 in Darlington.
