Dawson County Tigers basketball head coach Thad Burgess has accepted a position with Oconee County High School in Watkinsville, according to Dawson County Athletic Director Grady Turner.

"I love the man, hate to see him go," Turner said.

Burgess took multiple boys' basketball teams to the state tournament, even reaching the Elite Eight in 2012 with a 25-8 record.

That year the team received a No. 1 ranking in the state.

The Tigers also won their first region championship ever under his leadership.

"He's been here for 13 years. He's done about everything you could do here," Turner said. "This was a good opportunity. It's a good move for him."

Burgess is the second winningest boys' coach in Dawson County history and third on the all-time wins list.

Turner also confirmed the departure of assistant basketball coach Wes Greer. Greer is also the head coach for the girls' golf team.

Greer has taken a position as head coach of the Elbert County girls' basketball team in Elberton.

"We are losing two really good coaches," Turner said. "I think the world of both men. We will try to replace them with equal quality and that will be hard to do, but we will do our best."

Turner said they haven't looked at anyone for the positions yet, but feels like they will have many applications when the news gets out.
