The Dawson County boys’ golf team finished the season with a seventh place finish in the Region 8-AA tournament April 18 at The Traditions golf course in Braselton.

Winning the region championship was Hart County with a team total of 313.

North Oconee finished in second place with a score of 316. Both Hart County and North Oconee advanced to the state AA golf tournament.

Head Coach Van Samples’ team scored 354, behind the team low medalist score of 79 by Wesley Bearden. Bearden had the sixth lowest score over the 18-hole course.

The Traditions proved tough for several golfers. Its tight fairways and deep rough made it a difficult course to manage.

Tigers John Chameli and Caleb Samples both shot an 89.

Casey Compton scored a 99. Clay Glover finished the 18-hole course with a 97 and Logan Lewis scored a 129.

Low medalist in the region event was Nathan Mallonee of Oglethorpe County. He shot a 71.

Gibbs of Hart County was second, and Thomas Whitley of Jackson County was third with a 74.

“Our kids played hard. We had a great year,” Samples said.

Hart County had three golfers score in the 70s. John Daniel Gibbs scored a 72, John Vollrath had a 76 and Garrett Bailey came in with a 79. The win was Hart County’s second region title in the past four years.

The Titans will join the Bulldogs at the state tournament May 2 at The Creek at Hard Labor Park in Rutledge.
