Virginia Ann Hammond Martin Sefzik, 76, of Cumming, died Sept. 6, 2016.
She was the daughter of Chesley and Laura Mae Hammond and was born on Nov. 10, 1939 in Forsyth County.
She grew up in the Coal Mountain community, where she lived most of her life.
Miss Ann, as she was known to so many, became a teacher in the Forsyth County School System at the age of 17.
She earned her bachelor's degree, two master's degrees and a specialist degree, all while teaching full time.
She worked at Bethelview School, Chestatee High School and Forsyth County High School, where she passed on her love of history to her students.
As the years passed, Miss Ann became an assistant principal at Forsyth County High, North Forsyth Junior High, Cumming Elementary and Otwell Junior High.
She then served as principal of Chestatee Elementary School for many years.
Even in retirement she continued to work for the school system she loved so much by serving as an administrator in the testing department at the Forsyth County Board of Education. All told, she worked for Forsyth County Schools for 49 years.
She was well known and much loved by those who had the pleasure of learning from her, working for her, or working with her. And she loved every second of her work for Forsyth County Schools. Had it been possible, 49 years would have just been the beginning. After retiring she kept her grandchildren, and volunteered at Pleasant Grove Preschool.
Miss Ann was known by another name to those closest to her - Grandma. This is probably the name she most treasured. She never missed any event, recital, game, celebration, ceremony or concert that involved her children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren.
Her parents, Chesley and Laura Mae Hammond; brother, William "Bud" Hammond; and stepson, Todd Sefzik, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Sefzik; sister, Nadine Gravitt; son, Mack Martin; daughter, Cecilia Weldy; son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Cindy Martin; granddaughter and husband, Amie and Christian Holmes; granddaughter and husband, April and Andrew Oliver, Abby, Emily and Eli Martin; great-grandchildren, Daigan and Emerson Oliver; stepchildren, Tanya and Richard Clark, Richard Sefzik Jr., Jody Sefzik; step-grandchildren, Richard Sefzik III, Stacey Clark, Patrick Clark, Jennifer Funderburk, Jaymi Sefzik, Jessica Delval; step-great-grandchildren, Carlee, Gracie, Annabelle and Lucy; various other relatives also survive.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 9 in the Ingram Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Ruel Martin and Richard A. Sefzik III officiating. Interment followed in Sawnee View Memorial Gardens.
Ingram Funeral Home and Crematory of Cumming was in charge of the arrangements.
