Ted Monkus

Ted Monkus, 89, of Dawsonville, died July 31, 2016.

Born Oct. 29, 1926 in Haysville, N.C., to the late Charles and Leila Monkus, he had lived in Dawson County for the past 52 years, having moved from Fannin County.

Prior to his retirement, Mr. Monkus held various occupations, including operating a restaurant at Big Canoe.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served in the European Theater and received a Purple Heart.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Dawsonville.

His wife of 33 years, Mary Monkus; daughter, Carol Crumbley; two sisters and four brothers, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include children, Barbara and Jerry Dotson, Michael Monkus, Deborah and Allen Foster, all of Ellijay, Billy and Joyce Monkus, Roy Monkus, Fredia and Ronnie Casper, all of Dawsonville; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; various other relatives also survive.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 3 at Whitfield Memorial Gardens in Dalton with the Dr. Scott Gilbert officiating.

Bearden Funeral Home of Dawsonville is in charge of the arrangements.
