Mary Virginia Thornton Kunkel, 95, of Dawsonville passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, May 1, 2020. 

Mary was born on October 15, 1924, in Atlanta; she was a daughter of George Moon and Willie Virginia Thornton and sweet sister to William Thornton of Dillard, Ga.

Funeral service will be noon, Thursday, May 7, 2020, in the chapel of McDonald and Son Funeral Home in Cumming with the family receiving friends from 10 a.m. to noon at the funeral home. Please practice social distancing. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta.

Mrs. Kunkel was owner and operator of Frank Kunkel and Sons Jewelry, a member of Friendship Force and a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Dawsonville. 

Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Kunkel Sr. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Frank Jr. and Lynn Kunkel of Dawsonville; brother, Billy Thornton of Bethlehem, Ga.; grandchildren, Carmen and Clay Cunningham, Christi and Shawn Harris, Frank III and Heather Kunkel, Carly and Josh Elrod; great-grandchildren, Cydney, Carter, Conner, Chandler, Caitlynn, Calee, Zack and Kelsey. 

This extraordinary woman was an absolute joy to everyone that crossed her path. She walked this earth filled with God’s grace. We all have peace in knowing that Mary (Mima) is with her our risen Lord. Our lives are forever better because of this amazing woman.
