John Wayne Barnes, 71, of Cumming, died Dec. 20, 2013.

John was born June 15, 1942 in Raleigh, N.C. and served as a corporal in the U.S. Army with the military police in Vietnam.

He was a graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in physical education and loved the "Dawgs."

John loved golf and his career as sales manager with Greene Ford in Gainesville. His grandchildren were his sunshine.

He was a lifelong Baptist and member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

His brothers, Jack Barnes, Jimmy Barnes and Fred Barnes; and a sister, Ruth Powell, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Martin Barnes; sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Lori Barnes-Simmons of Illinois, Bradley and Allison Martin of Dahlonega; brothers, Wade Barnes of Ohio and Thurmond Barnes of Virginia; four grandchildren, Sylvia and James Robert Simmons, Jacob and Caleb Martin; special niece, Hannah Loggins; various other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Dec. 23 at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Garry English, Ruel Martin, Dennis Bottoms and Dusty Mathis officiating. Interment followed at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions were requested made to the Oak Grove Baptist Church Camp Fund.

Ingram Funeral Home and Crematory of Cumming was in charge of the arrangements.
