Broughton Fred Stancil, 96, of Ball Ground, died Nov. 30, 2011.

Broughton and his parents had operated Stancil Store on the corner of Conns Creek and Yellow Creek Road for 99 years. He graduated from Mica School and attended Reinhardt College and Berry College.

Broughton served in the U.S. Army and was a World War II veteran who was cited for courageous conduct during action in British New Guinea.

He was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and the American Legion.

Survivors include his children, Marilyn Harvey, Susan West, Ann Reagan, Mark Stancil and Dawn Hopkins; sister, Loraine Ruddell; grandchildren, Cathryn Forney, Carrie Jones, Ryan Harvey, Lee Reagan, Steven Roper, Lynn Reagan, Julie Mess, Will Stancil, Lauren Haygood, Eli Hopkins, Caleb Hopkins and Noah Hopkins; two great-grandchildren, Reece Jones and Caden Forney; various other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Dec. 3 at the Sosebee Memorial Chapel with the Dr. John Reale and the Rev. Max Padgett officiating. Interment was held at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Georgia National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials were requested made in his memory to the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Building Fund, 1853 Cowart Road, Dawsonville, GA 30534.

Sosebee Funeral Home of Canton was in charge of the arrangements.
