The first section of the “double roundabout” at state Route 9 and Dawson Forest Road is expected to open Monday, Feb. 15, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.
The upcoming traffic shift will put traffic in position for the finished double roundabout and allow for workers to finish the construction project, according to a GDOT news release.
Previously, the two roads met with two intersections, which provided right turn access to Dawson Forest Road and left turn access to State Route 9 with connector streets. The double roundabout project will replace these intersections with two single-lane roundabouts.
“The two roundabouts were constructed independent from each other since the existing intersections are offset from each other,” the release said.
The traffic shift’s start date is dependent on weather, and all roads will stay open during the remainder of project completion. GDOT is urging drivers to be careful when approaching the new intersections.
“Motorists are encouraged to exercise caution as they learn the new roundabout traffic patterns,” the release said. “Motorists are cautioned to reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, stay alert, and watch for workers.”To get real-time information on the status of the project or traffic conditions, call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app.
