Northeast Georgia Medical Center earns three Center of Excellence designations

Northeast Georgia Medical Center is now the first hospital in Georgia to receive three Center of Excellence Accreditations, in colorectal surgery, minimally invasive surgery and minimally invasive gynecology, according to a release by NGMC.

“Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), an internationally recognized patient safety organization, recognized NGMC for its dedication to delivering safe, effective and evidence-based patient care in these three designated areas through its independent, external process of evaluation,” the release said.

These three new accreditations are in addition to two other Center of Excellence accreditations NGMC received previously, for robotic surgery and hernia surgery. NGMC was also the first in Georgia to receive these accreditations.

“These designations speak volumes to the dedication and commitment of our surgeons and clinical staff at Northeast Georgia Medical Center to provide the highest quality surgical care — close to home — for our community,” Carol Burrell, president and CEO of Northeast Georgia Health System, said in the release.

Healthcare organizations and surgeons trying to earn these accreditations by SRC undergo a self-assessment and rigorous site inspection, according to the release. This process includes the physicians, nurses and administrators who are involved in the program, and the inspection presents the best practices to help an organization or surgeon improve care and services.

“This designation helps our patients throughout the region and state identify specific providers who have met SRC’s nationally recognized standards for top quality care,” Andrew Greed, medical director of NGMC’s robotic surgical program, said in the release. “I’m thankful for the leadership of Dr. Fernando Ayciñena, our colorectal surgery program director, and co-directors of NGMC’s minimally invasive gynecology program — Drs. Jason Bailey and Keshma Saujani — all of whom have been instrumental in helping us become the first in the state to earn these accreditations.”

In addition to the three new accreditations, SRC recognized 12 of NGMC’s physicians as Surgeons of Excellence in the areas of colorectal surgery, minimally invasive gynecology and minimally invasive surgery.
