At the Dawson County High School Senior Scholarship night on Thursday, May 20, more than 70 graduating seniors were awarded scholarships worth over $340,000 from groups and businesses in the community.

According to DCHS Counselor Kate Jarrard, scholarships given to students on senior scholarship night are a way for local groups to support graduates and send them off to the next phase of their careers.

Jarrard said that with the $340,000 awarded on senior scholarship night, DCHS students have received a grand total of $1,123,500 in scholarships this year, not including HOPE and Zell Miller awards.

“We are so proud of our student's hard work and dedication and immensely grateful for all of our local community contributors,” Jarrard said.

Among the groups that awarded scholarship money to DCHS seniors was the Dawson County Lions Club. According to Lions Club President Marty Horne, giving scholarships to local students is one of the most important ways his group gives back to the community.

“I believe that the only way that the world can keep being a better place is by supporting our mission in the community,” Horne said. “The kids are our future, and I have to say I’ve been really impressed with the students that have graduated from Dawson County High School.”

According to Horne, the Lion’s Club has been giving scholarships to Dawson County graduates for around 50 or 60 years. Last year the club gave scholarships to 14 students, and this year it was able to give scholarships to 23 students headed to colleges and technical schools.
