State and local officials have extended a statewide prohibition on jury trials through the next month.

According to a press release from Northeastern Judicial Circuit Court Administrator, Jason Stephenson, this extension cancels all trials in Dawson and Hall Counties which were scheduled for the week of March 1.

In an order filed earlier this week, Chief Justice Harold D. Melton of the Georgia Supreme Court stated that the statewide prohibition could be lifted in March, assuming that conditions caused by COVID-19 continue to improve.

In anticipation of the prohibition being lifted in 30 days, the release states that the Superior Court will be taking steps to summon jurors for trials starting in March. Prospective jurors will be notified by the clerk of court’s information line, the release said.

“In consultation with the District Attorney, grand jury proceedings will also resume in March assuming local conditions continue to improve,” the release said.
