Authorities say that a Dawson County firefighter was arrested last week and charged with allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, following a single-vehicle wreck in south Dawson County.
Lt. Michael Robert Baumgartner, 31, of Cumming, was taken into custody by the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office at about 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 1, 2021, after deputies responded to a crash in the area of 6175 Hwy. 9 south, near the Forsyth County line.
In an email to the Dawson County News, Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson said that deputies determined that Baumgartner’s vehicle had left the roadway, traveled down an embankment and struck several trees.
During an investigation of the crash, deputies allegedly smelled alcohol coming from Baumgartner’s person, Johnson said, and found cause to charge him with a misdemeanor count of DUI Alcohol and failure to maintain lane after conducting a field sobriety test.
Baumgartner was booked into the Dawson County Detention Center on Feb. 1, and was released shortly after on a bond of $1,200.
Dawson County Public Information Officer Laura Fulcher told the Dawson County News on Tuesday that Baumgartner has been placed on administrative leave without pay, pending further investigation by local authorities.
