A 14-year-old Dawson County Junior High School student has been arrested on gun and drug charges after allegedly being found in possession of a firearm and prescription drugs.
According to Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson, the student was charged with illegally possessing or carrying a firearm, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime on Tuesday morning, after a firearm was located in the teen’s backpack prior to being dropped off at school.
No threats had been made by the student, and it does not appear that the teen had any intended target for violence, Johnson said.
On Wednesday, Johnson told the Dawson County News that the firearm was loaded when it was discovered, but investigators later discovered that it was missing an internal part which rendered the firearm inoperable.
Investigators are still trying to confirm where the teen obtained the firearm, he added.
The teen is being held in a regional youth detention center and the case is still under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
