This month, Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation is celebrating its 84th year serving the North Georgia area.

According to a press release by Sawnee EMC, July 16 will mark the organization’s anniversary. Since being established in 1938, it has grown from a small electric cooperative, created by community leaders to bring electricity to what was at that point a very rural area without power, to what it is today: the third largest electric cooperative in the state of Georgia and the eighth largest in the United States.

“With its humble beginnings as a small electric cooperative serving approximately 750 members along 163 miles of distribution line, Sawnee EMC has evolved into what it is today, a modern electric utility with more than 360 employees serving over 169,000 member-owners over 11,949 miles of distribution lines throughout a seven-county service area in north Georgia,” the release said.

The story continues below.

The release added that the cooperative is well-positioned to continue providing reliable electricity to its member-owners for years to come, and that it is well-prepared to meet future electricity needs in its rapidly growing service area.

“Sawnee EMC’s long and rich history is grounded in the communities we serve and while technology and times have changed, our core principles of being good stewards of our members assets remain the same,” President and CEO Michael Goodroe said in the release. “We are an electric membership corporation focused on the varied energy needs of the members we serve.”

Sawnee EMC’s board and staff, the release said, are committed to delivering reliable, safe and affordable electricity, while keeping the cooperative’s rates among the lowest in the state. While much has changed during Sawnee EMC’s 84 years servicing the area, the release said that the cooperative is committed to maintaining this quality and remaining a trusted energy partner that its members can depend on.

“It is with great pride that I know when our staff walks through the doors of Sawnee EMC each day their sole mission is to serve the needs of our members with care and distinction,” Goodroe said in the release.
