Authorities returned Tuesday morning to the wooded area of Dawsonville Highway where a deer hunter reportedly found human remains.

Forsyth County Sheriff Ted Paxton said the discovery, which included a skull and portions of a skeleton, was made about dusk Monday between Nix and Julian roads in northeastern Forsyth.

“The deer hunter came out of the woods and came upon skeletal remains,” Paxton said.

He said deputies spent most of the night at the scene, before leaving due to the rain.

The remains will be turned over to the Georgia Medical Examiner’s Office, which will try to determine the identity.

Paxton said the name could be known as soon as week’s end, but that would depend largely on the case load and availability of dental records.

The remains may be of a man who went missing in October 2000.

“The 44-year-old white male lived about a half a mile from the site,” Paxton said.

“Of course, there’s nothing definitive yet, but we will be looking and seeing if the remains match. If they do, at that time after we notify the family we’ll release the name.”
